The New York Drama Critics' Circle met on May 12, 2008, to determine the winners of its annual awards. The results were as follows:
Best Play: August: Osage County, by Tracy Letts
Best Musical: Passing Strange, by Stew and Heidi Rodewald
Voting Detains: On the first ballot for Best Play, August: Osage County won ten votes—missing a majority among the Circle's 22 voting members. A second vote was then taken to determine whether an award would be given at all. Having agreed that one should, the Circle then moved to a weighted third ballot, which August: Osage County won with 44 points. Conor McPherson 's The Seafarer placed second (18 points); Tom Stoppard 's Rock 'n' Roll was third (16 points). In regard to Best Foreign Play, it was decided that since half of the Circle's members had not been able to see National Theatre of Scotland's Black Watch, it would be considered next year after its return engagement. After , Rock 'n' Roll received nine votes to The Seafarer's eight, the vote moved to a second ballot, in which a majority of members voted against giving an award for Best Foreign Play.
The members agreed that the Broadway musical In the Heights could not be considered this year, as it has been eligible last year in its Off-Broadway run. On the first ballot, Passing Strange won 11 votes—just under a majority—but won on the third ballot, earning 43 points to Adding Machine's 37.
The Circles Membership consists of President Adam Feldman (Time Out New York),
Vice President Eric Grode (New York Sun), Treasurer Joe Dziemianowicz (New York Daily News)also

Helen Hayes Awards
The 24th Annual Helen Hayes Awards honored work seen on DC-area stages between Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2007.
In anticipation of the 24th Helen Hayes Awards, four special awards were announced April 11. They are:
The Helen Hayes Tribute, presented to preeminent British classical actor and director Sir Derek Jacobi in recognition of his illustrious career on stage and screen for more than 50 years. The Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Non-Resident Production was given to Jacobi in 1985 for Cyrano de Bergerac and again in 1988 for Breaking the Code. The Helen Hayes Tribute is sponsored by Washington philanthropists Gilbert and Jaylee Mead "to honor outstanding professionals who have enriched our lives and made a profound and lasting contribution to the theatre."
