New and Noteworthy — March 2010
Long Wharf Theatre will present No Child, written and performed by Nilaja Sun, directed by Hal Brooks, March 17 through April 18 on Stage II. Sun faces an ambivalent student body, a constant stream of new teachers and impending Regents exams while struggling to put on a play production at fictional Malcolm X High in the Bronx. No one – teacher, student, janitor, principal or security guard - is left behind by Sun’s hilarious and heartbreaking expose, based on her own experience as a teaching artist in New York City. Meanwhile A.R.Gurney’s, Sylvia, directed by Long Wharf Theatre Artistic Director Eric Ting, stars Jacob Ming-Trent, John Procaccino, Erica Sullivan, and Karen Ziemba and runs on the Mainstage through March 14. Curtain times are Tuesdays at 7 pm., Wednesdays at 2 and 7 pm., Thursdays and Fridays at 8 pm, Saturdays at 3 pm and 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm and 7 pm. Tickets are $30-$65. The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, adapted by Constance Congdon from a translation by Christina Sibul, directed by Christopher Bayes gets a run at Yale Rep March 12-April 13 at the University Theatre, 222 York Street. The cast is Sarah Agnew (Beatrice), Will Cobbs (Waiter), Liam Craig (Brighella/Porter), John Treacy Egan (Il Dottore), Steven Epp (Truffaldino), Allen Gilmore (Pantalone), Andy Grotelueschen (Silvio), Chris Henry (Waiter), Jesse J. Perez (Florindo), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Clarice), and Liz Wisan (Smeraldina). The production features original musical by Chris Curtis and Aaron Halva, sets by Katherine Akiko Day, costumes by Valérie Thérèse Bart, lighting by Chuan-Chi Chan and sound by Nathan Roberts Identities are mistaken, engagements are broken, and lovers are reunited in Goldoni’s commedia dell’arte masterpiece when the wily—and chronically hungry—servant Truffaldino hatches a zany scheme to double his wages (and his meals) by serving two masters at once. Motherhood Out Loud , a celebration of the personal, funny, diverse, exciting, touching, and altogether extraordinary experiences that unite stepmoms. single moms, immigrant moms. grandmothers, new moms and all moms everywhere, runs through March 21. Directed by Lisa Peterson, it stars Randy Graff, Amy Irving, James Lecesne and April Yvette Thompson. Performances are Tuesday-Thursday at 7:30 pm, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, Sundays at 2 pm and 7:30 pm, Saturdays at 2 pm and some Wednesdays at 2 pm. The Palace Theater in Waterbury presents a limited run of the family favorite Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Friday, March 12 at 8 pm, Saturday, March 13 at 2 pm and 8 pm and Sunday March 14 at 1 and 6:30 pm. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature film, this classic musical love story is filled with unforgettable characters, lavish costumes and dazzling production numbers including “Be Our Guest” and the title song.
